Painting requires me to be present in the moment, so that I can deeply observe the subject before me. I discern how light transforms color and form, and look for harmonies and contrasts. I search for the motif or central theme of each scene, exploring color, hue, saturation, temperature and value. Each painting is a discovery.
When painting a landscape I strive to capture a moment in time and a sense of place. My objective is not to copy but to be inspired by my subject - to design by choosing from the rhythms and elements of nature. One of my aspirations is that, through my painting, my voice might join with those of others who speak out against the progressive destruction of our natural world.
